I think it depends on why and what the board is about. There are some out there that want to start a board just to have a I'm the boss complex so do as i ask syndrome, some admins out there are like that. If some make a board out of a genuine interest about something, then fine. But it isn't easy running a board, keeping up wither ever changing updates and a fresh board takes up time, if people are not committed to to so, then no it isn't for some.

I was going to write, basically, the exact same thing Psychokitty!

I don't think everyone is cut out to be an Administrator of a forum, just like not everyone is qualified to be a member of management. There's much more too it than simply being the boss.

I immensely dislike it when you have either of the two:
1. I created a forum so everyone should come join and participate. Want to be staff?!
2. I created a forum so if you don't like it then tough, it's mine and that's the way it is.

A forum is a community. It belongs to everyone. The Administrator is simply the behind-the-scenes controller that keeps things running smoothly and modifying the forum as it needs. It's not to be a dictator. It's not to simply be a cheerleader either.

Before anyone starts a message board, they should develop a "road plan". What's the genre going to be. How are the categories going to be laid out. What forums will the board consist of. What options/modifications are going to be installed. How do you plan to operate the site, how many staff members, what types of groups will your users be able to join, etc. Just because you can register and have a board online in mere seconds doesn't mean instant success or site activity.

I agree with both of them as well.
Don't start a board if you aren't prepared to invest in it. And that means learning some things about it and not expecting others to do all the behind the scenes work.

A couple of boards I am on the admin seems to need help, not always there, and seems to not know a whole lot. Driving me crazy. For the last week or so the admins have not been there but still expects activity. I deleted one today because it drove me nuts. I am ready to take off my membership from others because of various of elements. I am a web designer/theme creator and most things I see on this one board is a BIG NO NO in my field to do because it is not appealing more like annoyances. If an element is distracting or annoys than it is best to get rid of it, right? Wrong they just changed it to something more annoying. You have to scroll through a whole lot of images, signatures to get to discussions, icons next to names that are so big that it annoys you. I would lose my business if I did some of the things these individuals are doing. Supposed to be easy on the eyes, less distractions, and not annoying. Want it to be appealing. Just asking the question because wanted input. Your thoughts.

Great points. I have been on boards that have those admins -- after I joined is when I find out though so I usually delete my membership. I made mine more like a blog forum, but more people came so it is back to being a message board. I don't have rules only the common sense ones. People can come and go as they please. They can post about anything as long as it is clean (since most times I have my daughter right next to me.) But make it a place where it is something a person wants to go to.

Just look at some boards and I know they like the glitters, the falling stuff, or bright colors but thinking of the viewers would be nice. I have a small business I help three people with websites and if I did what these message boards are doing I would lose business and my clients would lose business as well. Not a good thing.

One board I am on has falling whatever icon it is (season, holiday, other) and they love it, drives me crazy. But it is what the admin wants. Well they are not going to get me to visit all the time. Wish their was an extension or plug in for my computer where I can stop the falling stuff so I can just post. Or the bright colors of backgrounds where your eyes hurt but it is what the admins love. Lets not overlook the fact that visitors come for maybe a second to post a hello. Then they wonder why people are not staying on long or going to other forums on this board. Ah I wonder why?

I agree that not everyone should start a message board, especially if they are not going to commit to it.

I feel that everyone has different taste. Some like blog forums and like to chit chat a lot. I'm not crazy about reading really long posts, because I find it's tedious. I'm not crazy about long health issues and complaints.

I also like visiting different boards with different set ups. I like FUN type boards. Sure, some serious issues are fun to talk about, but I primarily want to have fun and have an outlet from real life.

I don't come on anyone's board to critique or criticize it. I would not go on another owner's board and publicly say what I don't like. I think it's very rude. However, if an owner/admin asks me for an opinion, I will say it diplomatically.

I don't mind chit chat. Sometimes that is all they have and need someone to share it with. I do agree about the health issues. While I am sympathetic because I do have my own, I can't be bothered letting everyone know about it day in and day out. That would drive even me bonkers http://yoursmiles.org/bsmile/fun/b0201.gif

I should have been more specific. I mean the long story chit chats, when it's almost a book. I don't mind talk about health issues as long it's not a book. lol
